Special breeding project
Over the years we have produced White Suffolks that grow minimal wool (bare bellies and neck as mature sheep) without a lot of effort .We have been steadily working on a project to improve on this trait though selection. As a result we now have a few White Suffolk rams that lose up to about 70% of their wool.
We feel there are some huge advantages in this given that shearers are getting harder to get. From our experience these rams are only losing their wool from about nine months of age, wool is soft and free of fibre so skin values from prime lambs should not be affected. This provides the advantages of a White Suffolk with high growth and meat yield, quiet temperament, skin value etc. without the disadvantages of the shedding wool breeds.
The ram pictured (AF0103) weighed 124 kg at 12 months after running with 130 ewe lambs for 2 months. most of which are in lamb and lambing now. The lambs so far are very pleasing.
When this ram has lost his wool he only retains about one hand width each side of his backbone so he could be easily shorn standing up.
This been achieved using only pure White Suffolk genetics; no genetics have been used from any of the shedding wool varieties whatsoever. Semen will be available from this ram, for further enquiries contact Andrew Krieg on 0409 169 693.
